This Char Dham pilgrimage begins in Dehradun and quickly ascends into the Himalayan foothills toward the hill station of Mussoorie. After exploring the scenic viewpoints and temples of the region, the journey continues deeper into the Garhwal mountains toward Barkot through forested hill roads and valley landscapes.
From Barkot, travelers enter the Yamuna Valley where the pilgrimage route leads to Yamunotri through a combination of mountain driving and trekking paths starting from Janki Chatti. After completing the first Char Dham shrine, the itinerary continues eastward through mountain valleys toward Uttarkashi along the Bhagirathi River basin.
Uttarkashi serves as the base for visiting Gangotri in the higher Himalayan region. This stage of the journey follows the Bhagirathi valley into the upper Garhwal mountains before returning to Uttarkashi and continuing southward toward Guptkashi across several river valleys and mountain passes.
Guptkashi becomes the gateway for the Kedarnath pilgrimage. Travelers proceed toward Gaurikund and undertake the traditional Himalayan trek through high-altitude terrain to reach the Kedarnath temple region before returning to the Mandakini valley.
After Kedarnath, the route shifts eastward into the Alaknanda Valley passing through major pilgrimage gateways such as Joshimath before reaching the sacred Badrinath temple located in the higher Himalayan belt.
The final stage of the itinerary gradually descends from the high Himalayas through the series of sacred river confluences known as the Panch Prayag. The journey continues toward the foothills and concludes in the spiritual town of Dehradun before final departure.
