This Char Dham pilgrimage begins in Haridwar, one of the holiest cities on the banks of the Ganges. The journey starts with local temple visits and spiritual landmarks before gradually moving from the plains into the Himalayan foothills toward Barkot through the scenic hill regions of Uttarakhand.
From Barkot, the itinerary enters the Yamuna Valley where pilgrims travel to the Yamunotri region through a combination of mountain driving and trekking routes. After completing the first Char Dham shrine, the journey continues eastward through forested valleys toward Uttarkashi in the Bhagirathi River region.
Uttarkashi serves as the base for visiting Gangotri in the higher Himalayan zone. This stage of the journey follows the Bhagirathi River valley into the upper Garhwal mountains before returning to Uttarkashi and continuing southward across multiple river valleys toward Guptkashi.
The route from Uttarkashi to Guptkashi passes several sacred river confluences that define the geography of the Garhwal Himalayas. Guptkashi then becomes the base for the Kedarnath pilgrimage, where travelers proceed toward Gaurikund and undertake the traditional Himalayan trek to reach the temple region.
After completing the Kedarnath pilgrimage, the journey shifts eastward into the Alaknanda Valley. The route passes through mountain towns including Joshimath before reaching the sacred Badrinath temple region located in the higher Himalayan belt.
Following Badrinath, the itinerary gradually descends through the Alaknanda valley and the series of sacred confluences known as the Panch Prayag. The journey then continues toward the Ganges foothills, reaching the spiritual town of Rishikesh for temple visits and riverfront exploration before concluding the pilgrimage.
