8 Days Himachal Pradesh Trip Overview

This 8-day Delhi to Zanskar journey begins with an overnight Volvo transfer to Manali, gradually transitioning from plains to Himalayan foothills. From Manali, the route crosses the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul and moves northward to Jispa, preparing for higher altitude travel.

The journey then ascends over Shinkula Pass into the remote Zanskar Valley, reaching Purne and Padum. Multiple days are dedicated to exploring Zanskar’s monasteries, rock carvings, river valleys, and cliffside spiritual sites, including a short trek to Phuktal Monastery along the Tsarap River.

After covering Padum and surrounding heritage landmarks, the route retraces back across Shinkula into Lahaul and returns to Manali. The final day focuses on Manali’s temples, forest walks, and local markets before the overnight Volvo journey back to Delhi, completing a full Himachal–Zanskar circuit.

Begin your journey in Delhi with preparations for an overnight trip to Manali.

Begin the day with breakfast at your camp/hotel in Purney and proceed toward one of Zanskar’s most extraordinary spiritual sites.
The road is now motorable up to the bridge, after which a short and easy trek of approx. 1 km leads to Phuktal Monastery.
The trail runs alongside the Tsarap River, passing dramatic gorges, small hamlets, and suspension bridges set against stark mountain walls.
Explore the spectacular cliff-built Phuktal Monastery, known for its cave-like structure, ancient prayer halls, meditation caves, and beautiful Zanskar murals.
Spend quiet time absorbing the monastery’s peaceful atmosphere and its breathtaking natural setting.
After the visit, trek back the same way to the bridge and return by vehicle to Purney.
Enjoy dinner at the hotel and relax with an overnight stay in Purney, surrounded by the stillness of the Zanskar Valley.

Start with Gyalwang Rinpoche Rock Carving, a revered rock-cut Buddha image reflecting the region’s ancient Buddhist heritage. Continue to the 5 Gyanai Buddha Rock Carving, known for its intricate carvings and spiritual significance.
Proceed to Karsha Monastery, the largest monastery in Zanskar Valley, offering one of the best panoramic views of Padum town. Nearby, visit the Karsha Buddha Statue and the Karsha Monastery New Complex, which also serves as the residence of His Holiness and showcases modern Tibetan architectural style.
Later, head to Stongdey Monastery, dramatically located on a ridge at the northern end of Zanskar, offering an eagle-eye view over the valley.
Conclude the day with a visit to Zangla Palace and the nearby Zangla Buddha Statue, reflecting Zanskar’s royal past and spiritual traditions.
Return to Padum by evening for dinner and overnight stay.
