This Char Dham pilgrimage begins in Dehradun and travels through the scenic hill roads of Mussoorie before reaching Barkot, the gateway to the Yamuna Valley and the Yamunotri pilgrimage region. The route gradually ascends from the foothills into the Garhwal Himalayan landscape.
From Barkot, the itinerary proceeds toward the Yamunotri region through a combination of mountain driving and trekking routes beginning at Janki Chatti. After completing the first Char Dham shrine, the journey continues eastward through forested valleys toward Uttarkashi along the Bhagirathi River basin.
Uttarkashi serves as the base for the Gangotri pilgrimage in the upper Himalayan region. After returning from the Gangotri valley, the route continues southward across several mountain valleys and sacred river confluences before reaching Guptkashi in the Mandakini Valley.
Guptkashi acts as the gateway for the Kedarnath pilgrimage where travelers take a helicopter journey to the temple region before returning to the Mandakini valley. The itinerary then shifts eastward across the Garhwal Himalayas toward the Alaknanda Valley.
Passing through Joshimath and nearby Himalayan settlements, the journey reaches the Badrinath temple region located in the higher Himalayan belt. After completing the pilgrimage, the route descends through the scenic Alaknanda valley and returns to Dehradun, concluding the Char Dham circuit.
