What Can Be Reimbursed Under LTC?

LTC reimbursement is not the same as the total holiday cost. Under Central Government LTC rules, reimbursement generally concerns eligible travel fares according to entitlement and prescribed conditions. Hotel charges, meals, sightseeing and local holiday activities are not automatically reimbursable.

The actual admissible amount must be determined by the employee's department under the rules applicable to the journey.

Where airline tickets are purchased through an authorised channel, the employee should retain the actual airline and authorised-agent records required by their department.

1. Confirm Your LTC Eligibility

Verify the eligible LTC block, destination, sanctioned leave, eligible family members and transport entitlement with your department before booking.

2. Check the Current Ladakh Air Travel Scheme

Special provisions have previously permitted certain Central Government employees to travel by air to Ladakh under specified conditions.

The special dispensation identified in the published government guidance was extended through 25 September 2026. Travellers booking after that date should verify whether a further extension or revised instruction is in force before relying on the special concession.

3. Use the Required Air Ticket Booking Channel

Central Government LTC rules include authorised-agent requirements for applicable air journeys. These agencies include Balmer Lawrie & Company, Ashok Travels & Tours and IRCTC.

Booking requirements differ according to entitlement and the applicable scheme. Travellers should use the required channel rather than assuming any privately booked airline ticket will qualify for reimbursement.

4. Follow Applicable Fare Rules

The admissible fare may be limited by travel class, route, authorised booking conditions or a prescribed comparison fare. Confirm the rules and retain any required fare comparison or booking evidence.

5. Keep Genuine Booking Documents

Retain airline e-tickets, boarding passes, booking confirmations, payment records and any additional documents required by the department.

Hotel and ground-tour invoices should reflect the services genuinely supplied and their actual charges.

6. Allow 48 Hours for Acclimatisation

Leh is situated at approximately 3,500 metres above sea level. Travellers flying into Leh must allow at least 48 hours for initial acclimatisation before visiting higher-altitude areas.

Avoid strenuous activities, high mountain passes and demanding sightseeing immediately after arrival.

7. Recognise Altitude Illness

Headache, nausea, dizziness and unusual fatigue can indicate altitude illness. Do not continue ascending if symptoms occur.

Confusion, difficulty walking or breathlessness at rest require urgent medical attention and appropriate descent or evacuation.

8. Check Permits and Road Conditions

Certain Ladakh routes may require applicable permissions or environmental fees. Mountain roads can close because of snow, landslides or official restrictions.

9. Prepare for Remote Travel

Carry warm clothing, suitable footwear, sunscreen, prescribed medicines, cash and offline travel details. Medical facilities and network coverage can be limited outside Leh.
