Five-Day Route Overview: Bhubaneswar, Konark, Puri and Chilika Lake

Follow the route Bhubaneswar → Dhauli → Pipili → Konark → Puri → Satapada → Puri → Raghurajpur → Bhubaneswar. Puri serves as your base for three nights, allowing separate days for darshan and Chilika rather than combining both into a rushed excursion.

Your overnight stops

  • Night 1: Bhubaneswar after Old Town sightseeing.
  • Nights 2, 3 and 4: Puri, with Konark covered during the transfer and Satapada visited as a day trip.
  • Day 5: Return to Bhubaneswar after visiting Raghurajpur.

How much arrival and departure time do you need?

The plan assumes you reach Bhubaneswar early enough for several hours of sightseeing on Day 1. If you arrive in the evening, add a night or reduce the temple circuit instead of compressing everything into the next morning.

Choose a late-afternoon or evening departure on Day 5 if you want an unhurried craft-village visit. Exact feasibility depends on your transport reporting requirements and road conditions.

This itinerary covers a coastal and cultural circuit. Wildlife parks, Koraput and Daringbadi need additional days and should be planned as separate extensions.

Day 1: Bhubaneswar’s Historic Temples and Old Town

Begin with Bhubaneswar’s Old Town, where active shrines, historic architecture and the surroundings of Bindu Sagar introduce Odisha’s temple traditions. Keep the day focused on this area rather than crossing the city repeatedly.

Morning: Lingaraj Temple and Bindu Sagar

Visit Lingaraj Temple first if darshan is a priority. Its substantial tower and surrounding shrines make it an important stop, but access is restricted to Hindus. Other visitors can enquire about the external viewing platform and current access arrangements.

Continue towards Bindu Sagar for a short walk around permitted public areas. Remember that the tank and nearby shrines form a sacred neighbourhood, so avoid interrupting rituals or photographing worshippers without permission.

Late morning: Mukteswar and Parsurameswar

Explore Mukteswar Temple’s carved gateway and detailed stonework, followed by nearby Parsurameswar Temple. These stops provide architectural variety without requiring another long transfer.

Allow roughly three to four hours for the wider Old Town circuit, including darshan, walking and breaks. This is a planning estimate; queues and ritual arrangements can extend the visit.

Afternoon: lunch, rest and an optional museum

Try an Odia lunch and return to your hotel during the hottest hours. If you arrived early and still have time, choose one museum after checking its opening schedule. Keep the evening relaxed before the following day’s transfer.

Day 2: Dhauli, Pipili and Konark Sun Temple Before Continuing to Puri

Leave Bhubaneswar after an early breakfast with your luggage. This is the itinerary’s busiest sightseeing day, so keep shopping and coastal stops brief enough to preserve time at Konark.

First stop: Dhauli

Visit Dhauli’s Shanti Stupa and, where accessible, the Ashokan rock-edict area. The stupa and edicts are separate points, so include time to move between them rather than treating Dhauli as a single roadside photograph.

Allow approximately 45–75 minutes, depending on walking pace and interest. The hilltop can be exposed to sun and rain.

Second stop: Pipili

Continue to Pipili for appliqué work, including colourful wall hangings, umbrellas and decorative textiles. A focused stop of around 30–45 minutes is enough to browse a few shops and compare workmanship.

Ask about fabric, stitching and packing before buying. There is no need to purchase simply because a driver has stopped at a particular shop.

Afternoon: Konark Sun Temple

Have lunch before or after the monument according to your arrival time, then allow about two hours for the Sun Temple. Its chariot form, carved wheels, horses and sculptural details reward a slower visit or an explanation from an authorised guide.

Carry drinking water and sun protection. During hot weather, take a longer lunch break and visit later within official opening hours.

Continue to Puri for check-in. Add Chandrabhaga or Ramchandi only if daylight, weather and everyone’s energy allow; beach time is already included on the next day.

Day 3: Jagannath Temple, Puri Beach and Local Food

Keep Day 3 flexible around Jagannath Temple darshan. Having the full day in Puri gives you room for queues, religious rituals, meals and rest without another intercity transfer.

Morning: prepare for darshan

Check the current entrance and visitor arrangements before leaving your hotel. Entry is restricted to Hindus, and phones, cameras and other specified belongings are prohibited inside.

Wear modest clothing and leave unnecessary items securely at your accommodation. Allow several hours for the complete outing, including the approach walk, storage, security and darshan. An early start does not guarantee a short queue.

Lunch: Mahaprasad or an Odia meal

If you want Mahaprasad from Anand Bazaar, enquire about availability following the temple’s offerings. Treat the meal as part of the religious visit rather than expecting service at a fixed restaurant-style lunchtime.

Alternatively, choose an Odia meal with rice, dalma and seasonal vegetables. Explain dietary requirements clearly, particularly if you avoid onion, garlic or dairy.

Evening: beach and a short market walk

After resting, enjoy a seafront walk or time on the sand. Browse nearby shops for khaja and small souvenirs, but keep the evening light before the Chilika excursion.

Enter the water only where bathing is permitted and lifeguards advise that conditions are suitable. Avoid swimming after dark or treating other visitors’ behaviour as evidence of safety.

Day 5: Raghurajpur Crafts Village and Departure from Bhubaneswar

Check out after breakfast and visit Raghurajpur before continuing towards Bhubaneswar. This gives the final day a cultural focus without adding another long excursion.

Spend time with the craft rather than rushing through

Raghurajpur is known for Pattachitra painting and other traditional artistic practices. Visit an available workshop, ask how the artwork is made and take time to compare techniques and materials.

Allow approximately one-and-a-half to two hours in the village as a planning estimate. Individual artists may not be working when you arrive, so demonstrations should be arranged rather than assumed.

  • Ask before photographing artists, homes or works in progress.
  • Discuss the price and any demonstration fee clearly.
  • Check how paintings should be rolled, wrapped or carried.
  • Keep purchases protected from moisture and heavy luggage.

Continue to your departure point

After the visit, travel to Bhubaneswar airport or railway station. Allow roughly one-and-a-half to two-and-a-half hours from the village, depending on the endpoint and traffic, plus your required reporting time and a separate delay buffer.

If your departure is too early, move Raghurajpur to the afternoon of Day 3 or omit it. Do not rely on a minimum map estimate to protect an important connection.

Transport, Accommodation and Five-Day Trip Budget

A hired car offers the most flexibility for Day 2’s sightseeing transfer, the Satapada excursion and Day 5’s village visit. Budget travellers can combine public transport between towns with separately arranged local vehicles, allowing more time for connections.

Choose practical accommodation

In Bhubaneswar, prioritise straightforward access to Old Town and your arrival point. In Puri, choose between central seafront convenience, temple-side access or a quieter property farther away.

Check working lifts, hot water, room cooling, meal availability and the actual vehicle drop-off point. For three nights in Puri, convenient daily access often matters more than a slightly lower room rate.

Set a room-and-food allowance

The following are suggested budgeting assumptions, not verified tariffs or a package quotation. For two adults sharing one room:

  • Hotels: Allocating ₹2,000–₹4,000 per night gives ₹8,000–₹16,000 for four nights.
  • Food and drinking water: Allocating ₹500–₹900 per person daily gives ₹5,000–₹9,000 over five days.
  • Room-and-food subtotal: Approximately ₹13,000–₹25,000 under these assumptions.

Add transport and activities separately

The subtotal excludes travel to Odisha, local and intercity transport, the Chilika boat, monument tickets, guides, shopping and optional services. Obtain a quotation for the complete route before deciding your final budget.

Confirm tolls, parking, driver allowance, waiting time and kilometre limits. Check boat charges separately, including whether your quotation covers a private boat or shared seats. Festival dates, premium seafront rooms and year-end holidays can increase costs substantially.

Best Season, Temple Entry, Boat Booking and Beach Safety Tips

November to February is particularly suitable for this coastal itinerary, combining generally comfortable sightseeing conditions with Chilika’s winter bird season. October and March can also work, but weather and daytime comfort vary.

Adjust for heat, rain and festivals

In summer, shorten exposed sightseeing and keep a substantial afternoon break. During monsoon, retain alternatives for the Chilika day and follow warnings affecting roads, boating and beaches.

Rath Yatra brings exceptional crowds and traffic arrangements to Puri. Plan a festival-specific trip if attending rather than expecting this ordinary sightseeing schedule to remain practical.

Check access and booking conditions

  • Temples: Verify visitor eligibility, dress requirements, prohibited belongings and current queue arrangements.
  • Konark: Check the current ASI ticket category and opening arrangements; book through recognised official channels.
  • Boating: Confirm the operator, jetty, route, total charge and weather-related cancellation terms.
  • Accessibility: Ask about walking distances, steps, toilets and boat boarding before committing.

Keep coastal activities conditional on safety

Follow lifeguard instructions, warning flags and local restrictions. Pleasant weather on shore does not guarantee safe swimming or boating conditions.

Carry modest temple clothing, comfortable footwear, sun protection and a light layer for winter mornings. Keep essential medicines accessible, and leave enough flexibility to replace an outing when weather or a traveller’s comfort requires it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Odisha 5 Days Itinerary – Temples, Beaches and Chilika Lake

Begin with Bhubaneswar’s Old Town, then visit Dhauli, Pipili and Konark while transferring to Puri. Reserve separate Puri days for darshan and a Satapada excursion, then visit Raghurajpur before returning to Bhubaneswar. The route assumes an early Day 1 arrival and a suitably late Day 5 departure.
Spend the first night in Bhubaneswar, then three nights in Puri. This allows Konark during the transfer and separate days for Jagannath Temple and Satapada without repeated hotel changes. Choose accommodation by practical road access, meals and your preference for temple proximity, central seafront convenience or a quieter setting.
Focus on Old Town rather than crossing the city repeatedly. Combine Lingaraj, subject to eligibility, with permitted areas around Bindu Sagar, Mukteswar and Parsurameswar. Allow roughly three to four hours including walking and breaks, with more flexibility for queues. Add a museum only if arrival time, opening arrangements and energy permit.
Yes, but it is the busiest day of the itinerary. Allow approximately 45–75 minutes at Dhauli, 30–45 minutes for Pipili shopping and about two hours at Konark, plus driving, meals and breaks. Keep coastal stops optional and agree on the complete sightseeing transfer before travelling with luggage.
Keep the day flexible for the approach walk, storage, security, queues and religious services rather than scheduling another intercity transfer. Entry is restricted to Hindus, and specified belongings must remain outside. Enquire locally about Mahaprasad after offerings, rest afterwards and keep the evening beach or market visit light.
Yes. This itinerary uses Puri as a base and keeps Satapada as a separate day excursion, while Konark is covered during the transfer from Bhubaneswar. Confirm the jetty, operator, route, complete boat charge and cancellation terms. During unsuitable weather, retain a relaxed alternative rather than treating boating as guaranteed.
Allow roughly one-and-a-half to two hours for a thoughtful craft-village visit, arranging demonstrations rather than assuming artists will be working. Add the onward road journey, reporting requirements and a separate delay buffer. If your departure is too early, move the village visit to Day 3 or omit it instead of rushing.
For two adults sharing, the illustrative room-and-food subtotal is approximately ₹13,000–₹25,000 over five days and four nights. These are budgeting assumptions, not verified tariffs. Add travel to Odisha, transfers, sightseeing vehicles, the Chilika boat, monument tickets, guides and shopping separately, and obtain quotations matching your complete route.
It offers flexibility for the multi-stop Konark transfer, Satapada excursion and Raghurajpur visit, but budget travellers can combine public transport with local vehicles. Allow extra connection time and compare complete quotations. Confirm tolls, parking, driver allowance, waiting and kilometre limits, plus secure luggage arrangements during the sightseeing transfer.
November to February is particularly suitable for generally comfortable sightseeing and Chilika’s winter bird season, although your Satapada route remains distinct from dedicated birdwatching. Summer needs shorter exposed visits and rest, while monsoon requires boating alternatives. Confirm steps, toilets, walking distances and boat boarding for your group before committing.
