Sikkim's high-altitude winter destinations provide several simple ways to enjoy the snow without needing specialist adventure skills. Snow walking, snow play, winter photography and enjoying frozen landscapes are among the most accessible activities when weather and road conditions are suitable.
Walk and Play in the Snow
Places such as Zero Point, Yumthang Valley, Tsomgo Lake and Nathula can have accumulated snow during winter. Visitors can walk through safe, open areas, make snowballs and enjoy the surroundings, but should avoid steep snowbanks, unmarked terrain and icy slopes.
Photograph Snow-Covered Landscapes
Winter photography is particularly rewarding around Yumthang and Zero Point, where wide mountain landscapes can become covered in snow. Tsomgo and Nathula provide a different setting with high-altitude roads, snowy slopes and, at Tsomgo, the possibility of a partly or extensively frozen lake.
See Frozen Lakes
Cold winter conditions can freeze high-altitude lakes such as Tsomgo to varying degrees. Viewing a frozen lake surrounded by snow can be a memorable part of a winter trip, but never walk onto frozen water, as ice thickness and stability cannot be judged safely by appearance.
Enjoy Short Snow Walks
Short walks on suitable snow-covered ground can be enjoyable for first-time visitors, provided the terrain is gentle and conditions are safe. Wear water-resistant footwear with good grip, warm socks and waterproof or insulated gloves, and keep activity light at high elevations.
Altitude and weather should determine how much time you spend on snow activities. Move slowly, take breaks and stop strenuous activity if you develop headache, dizziness, nausea or unusual breathlessness. Road closures after heavy snowfall can also affect access, so keep snow activities flexible rather than depending on one destination or date.
