Seven-Day Route Overview: Travel Distances, Transport and Overnight Stops

The route runs from Agra through Lucknow and Ayodhya to Varanasi, with Mathura visited as a return excursion from Agra. Keeping the same Agra hotel for the first two nights avoids another luggage transfer, although it adds some backtracking.

Approximate road distances and travel allowances

JourneyApproximate distancePractical planning allowance
Agra–MathuraAbout 60–70 km each way1.5–2 hours each way
Agra–LucknowAbout 330–360 km, depending on endpoints5–6 hours with a break
Lucknow–AyodhyaAbout 135–150 km3–4 hours including city approaches
Ayodhya–VaranasiAbout 210–230 km5–6 hours including a break and city entry

These are route-planning estimates, not guaranteed journey times. Confirm hotel-to-hotel routing before booking, particularly during fog, heavy rain or festival restrictions.

Overnight plan

  • Nights one and two: Agra.
  • Nights three and four: Lucknow.
  • Night five: Ayodhya.
  • Night six: Varanasi.

A private vehicle is convenient for the Mathura excursion and changing hotels. Trains can replace selected transfers, but check actual schedules and station transfers before committing. If hiring one vehicle throughout, clarify tolls, parking, driver allowance and any one-way return charge.

The six-night structure assumes you are ready to sightsee early on day one. Arrival the previous evening adds a separate Agra night.

Day 1: Taj Mahal and Agra Fort

Begin with the Taj Mahal, followed by a proper meal break and Agra Fort. This gives both monuments enough attention without adding another distant attraction.

Morning: visit the Taj Mahal

Choose an early entry if you are already staying in Agra. Allow approximately two to three hours for security, the gardens and the monument, adjusting for queues and your interests.

The Taj Mahal normally opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset. It is closed to general visitors on Fridays.

During winter fog, consider whether a later morning visit would better suit your priorities. If arriving in Agra that morning, use your actual arrival time rather than assuming sunrise entry is possible.

Afternoon: explore Agra Fort

After lunch and rest, enter Agra Fort through Amar Singh Gate. Allow roughly two hours or longer for the permitted palace circuit, including courtyards and audience halls.

Keep the evening relaxed with dinner near your hotel. A short food outing is optional if you still have energy.

  • Check ticket categories and optional mausoleum admission before paying.
  • Carry minimal belongings and follow current security restrictions.
  • Use an authorised guide if you want historical interpretation.
  • In hot weather, shorten the afternoon programme rather than rushing through it.

If day one falls on Friday, swap the Agra monument day with the Mathura excursion, keeping the Taj Mahal on a permitted day.

Day 2: Mathura Temple Visits and Overnight Stay in Agra

Use day two for a focused Mathura pilgrimage and return to the same Agra hotel. Prioritise Krishna Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish Temple rather than adding a full Vrindavan circuit.

Morning: travel to Mathura

Leave after an early breakfast, with the departure chosen around confirmed temple opening periods. Allow additional time for local traffic and the final approach.

At Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, prepare for security checks and current restrictions on phones, bags and electronics. Keep time available for depositing and collecting belongings.

Later visit: Dwarkadhish Temple and Vishram Ghat

Check Dwarkadhish Temple’s current darshan sessions before travelling. If it is closed between services, use the interval for lunch and rest rather than waiting unnecessarily outside.

Visit Vishram Ghat when conditions permit. Evening Yamuna Aarti is an option only if you are comfortable returning to Agra later; it should not be compulsory after a tiring day.

  • Expect some walking through busy temple approaches.
  • Check footwear-deposit arrangements at each shrine.
  • Avoid adding Barsana, Govardhan or several Vrindavan temples to this excursion.
  • Return early enough for rest before the next day’s longer transfer.

Overnight: Agra.

Day 3: Travel to Lucknow and Explore Hazratganj

Day three is primarily a transfer day. Travel to Lucknow, check in and keep Hazratganj as a flexible evening outing.

Morning: depart for Lucknow

Allow approximately five to six hours door to door under ordinary conditions, including a suitable break. Hotel locations, traffic and weather can extend the journey.

Arrange a proper rest stop and do not use the expressway’s length to assume a guaranteed city-to-city arrival time.

Afternoon: check in and rest

Choose accommodation according to your access, dining and transport priorities. Confirm parking or the vehicle collection point if travelling with a driver.

Avoid booking a non-refundable activity immediately after the estimated arrival.

Evening: Hazratganj

Take a short shopping walk, browse chikankari stores or choose a café and seated dinner. Check fabric and embroidery details before buying rather than shopping hurriedly after a long drive.

  • Keep the walking distance modest.
  • Ask about restaurant seating and dietary choices.
  • Skip the outing if the transfer has been delayed.
  • Confirm the following day’s sightseeing arrangements before retiring.

Overnight: Lucknow.

Day 4: Lucknow’s Imambaras, Old-City Markets and Awadhi Food

Spend the day around the imambara and old-city area, with a rest before the food or shopping portion. A selective circuit is more rewarding than trying to cover every Lucknow landmark.

Morning: Bara Imambara and Bhul Bhulaiya

Begin with the central hall and other permitted areas. Use an authorised guide for the Bhul Bhulaiya, agreeing on the fee and duration beforehand.

The upper passages involve stairs and changes in light. Keep this section optional for anyone with limited mobility or discomfort in confined spaces.

Continue through Husainabad

View Rumi Darwaza from a safe public position, then visit Chota Imambara according to its opening arrangements. Remember that imambaras are religious spaces, with instructions on dress, footwear and photography.

Later: Chowk and an Awadhi meal

After a break, choose a short market walk or a seated meal. Try a small kebab-and-bread combination or biryani rather than ordering every speciality at once.

Vegetarian travellers can choose dedicated vegetarian dining, breakfast-style snacks or chaat, confirming ingredients where necessary.

  • Check ticket inclusions and separate guide charges.
  • Allow time for traffic and pedestrian approaches.
  • Keep shopping focused on a few stores.
  • Leave the Residency for another trip unless you remove other activities.

Overnight: Lucknow.

Day 5: Travel to Ayodhya for Ram Mandir Darshan and Sarayu Aarti

Leave Lucknow early enough to reach Ayodhya, settle in and prepare for darshan. Ram Mandir and Sarayu Aarti are the priorities; additional temples should remain optional.

Morning: transfer and arrival

Keep roughly three to four hours for the road journey and city approach. Confirm whether your vehicle can reach the hotel and how luggage will be handled if access is restricted.

Eat and take a short rest before joining a darshan queue.

Darshan: follow the confirmed arrangements

Check the temple trust’s current schedule, entry instructions and any booking conditions before travel. Do not assume a timed arrangement or aarti pass is included in an ordinary darshan plan.

Allow for security, belongings deposits and walking. Avoid committing to an exact finishing time.

Evening: Sarayu Aarti

Attend only if darshan and travel leave sufficient time. Confirm the exact venue and that evening’s starting time locally.

Choose a stable viewing position with an easy exit. If queues or delays make the day too demanding, keep the riverfront visit short rather than rushing between activities.

  • Do not add Hanuman Garhi and Kanak Bhawan automatically.
  • Confirm assistance directly for limited mobility.
  • Follow current restrictions on belongings and offerings.

Overnight: Ayodhya.

Day 6: Travel to Varanasi and Attend Evening Ganga Aarti

Day six needs an early, unhurried departure from Ayodhya. The aim is to reach Varanasi with time to check in and rest before the evening riverfront outing.

Morning: travel to Varanasi

Allow approximately five to six hours, including a break and the city approach. The route is roughly 210–230 km depending on endpoints, but distance alone does not establish the transfer time.

Avoid adding a sightseeing detour if attending evening aarti is important.

Afternoon: check in and confirm access

For a ghat-area hotel, ask where the vehicle must stop and how far luggage needs to be carried. Leave time for a meal, rest and the walk to your chosen viewing area.

Evening: Ganga Aarti

Dashashwamedh Ghat offers the best-known evening ceremony. Confirm the organiser’s current starting time and aim to reach your position approximately 45–60 minutes beforehand on an ordinary day.

Assi can be considered according to your hotel location and preferred experience. A boat is not required to watch aarti; any boat booking depends on current permissions and suitable conditions.

  • Agree on a return meeting point outside congested lanes.
  • Keep children close and exits clear.
  • Do not rush if the road transfer is delayed.

Overnight: Varanasi.

Day 7: Kashi Vishwanath Darshan, Ghat Visits and Departure

Keep Kashi Vishwanath darshan as the day’s main activity and choose a late departure where possible. An early flight or train leaves insufficient time for a relaxed darshan and ghat outing.

Morning: prepare for darshan

Check the temple trust’s current schedule and belongings restrictions. General darshan and attendance at a particular aarti are different arrangements.

Leave restricted possessions at your accommodation or a designated facility, and allow time to collect them afterwards. Confirm the permitted approach and any assistance requirements.

Later: a short ghat visit

After breakfast and rest, choose a manageable section of the riverfront rather than a long continuous walk. Expect steps, uneven surfaces and possible diversions.

A boat ride is optional only if authorised, conditions are suitable and the departure buffer remains generous. This final morning should not depend on a boat operating exactly on schedule.

Departure planning

  • Confirm the exact railway station or airport before arranging pickup.
  • Account for the walk from a lane-based hotel to the vehicle.
  • Allow traffic, security and operator reporting time in addition to the transfer.
  • Avoid placing a tight departure immediately after an unpredictable queue.

This seven-day plan leaves little room for Sarnath or extended Varanasi exploration. Add another night if those experiences are important, or if travelling with a slower-paced group.

October to March generally offers easier walking conditions, with winter fog requiring extra flexibility. For wider route options, explore Chal Banjare’s Uttar Pradesh travel guide before confirming hotels and transport.

Frequently Asked Questions About Uttar Pradesh 7 Days Itinerary – Agra, Mathura, Lucknow, Ayodhya and Varanasi

The route begins with Agra, includes a Mathura return excursion, then continues through Lucknow and Ayodhya to Varanasi. It combines Mughal monuments, temple visits, markets and riverfront ceremonies. Keep major transfers as lighter sightseeing days, and avoid adding distant attractions when doing so would remove rest or departure buffers.
The suggested structure uses six nights: two in Agra, two in Lucknow, one in Ayodhya and one in Varanasi. It assumes you are ready for sightseeing early on Day 1. Add a separate arrival night if needed, or another Varanasi night for Sarnath, slower exploration or an early departure.
Day 2 is designed for a focused Mathura excursion from Agra, prioritising Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish Temple and Vishram Ghat when practical. Adding a full Vrindavan circuit, Barsana or Govardhan would make it much more demanding. Return with enough time to rest before the longer Lucknow transfer the following day.
Plan the Taj Mahal followed by a meal break and Agra Fort, allowing several hours for each main experience according to queues and interests. Check admission categories and security before visiting. Arrange the monument day on a permitted date, swapping it with the Mathura excursion if the attraction calendar requires.
Treat Day 3 mainly as travel, allowing time for a break, hotel check-in and rest. Keep Hazratganj as a flexible evening walk, shopping or seated dinner option. Avoid a non-refundable activity immediately after estimated arrival and skip the outing if traffic or weather delays make the day tiring.
Focus on Bara Imambara, the optional guided Bhul Bhulaiya, Rumi Darwaza and Chota Imambara, then choose Chowk shopping or an Awadhi meal after a break. Upper passages involve stairs and confined spaces. Keep the Residency for another visit unless you remove another activity, and check separate admission and guide charges.
After the Lucknow transfer, check in, eat and rest before darshan. Follow the temple trust's confirmed entry arrangements and allow for security and walking. Add Sarayu Aarti only if time and energy permit, verifying its venue and starting time locally. Ordinary darshan should not be assumed to include a particular aarti pass.
No, a boat is not necessary to watch the evening ceremony. Choose a suitable land-based viewing position and confirm the starting time locally. Allow for walking through busy lanes and arrange a return meeting point. Any boat outing remains optional and depends on permissions, suitable conditions and reliable safety arrangements.
The final day prioritises Kashi Vishwanath darshan, a short ghat visit and departure, leaving little room for Sarnath. Add another night if Buddhist sites or extended city exploration matter to you. Avoid a tight connection immediately after unpredictable temple queues, and include luggage collection, lane walking and transport reporting time.
A private vehicle helps with the Mathura excursion, changing hotels and luggage, while trains can replace selected transfers if schedules fit. Compare actual station transfers and full door-to-door timings before booking. For a vehicle quotation, clarify tolls, parking, driver allowances and return charges, and confirm access to lane-based hotels.
