Four-Day Route Overview: Delhi to Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan

Follow Delhi → Agra → Mathura → Vrindavan → Delhi. Travelling to Agra first places Mathura and Vrindavan along the return journey, avoiding a separate Delhi-based excursion for each destination.

Day-by-day route

  • Day 1: Selected Delhi sights. Overnight in Delhi.
  • Day 2: Early departure for Agra, followed by the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Overnight in Agra.
  • Day 3: Transfer to Mathura for Krishna Janmabhoomi and Vishram Ghat. Overnight in Mathura or Vrindavan.
  • Day 4: Selected Vrindavan temples, lunch and return to Delhi.

Check the calendar before booking

The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays for general sightseeing. Choose dates that place Day 2 on another day, or redesign the overnight sequence before confirming hotels.

This programme assumes you are ready to begin sightseeing on the morning of Day 1. If you arrive late that day, reduce the Delhi programme rather than trying to fit a full city tour into the evening.

What fits comfortably

The itinerary covers two major Agra monuments and a focused Mathura–Vrindavan pilgrimage. Fatehpur Sikri, Govardhan Parikrama, Barsana and Nandgaon require additional time and should not be inserted into the same four days.

Day 4 is designed for a daytime temple visit and an evening return to Delhi. Staying for Prem Mandir’s evening illumination requires a later return or an additional night.

Day 1: Delhi Sightseeing and Overnight Stay

Use the first day for two substantial sightseeing stops and a central Delhi evening. Delhi is too spread out to combine every major monument with meaningful visiting time in one day.

Morning: Humayun’s Tomb

Begin around 9 am at Humayun’s Tomb, allowing approximately 90 minutes for the main tomb, garden layout and selected surrounding structures. Its Mughal garden-tomb design provides useful context before your Taj Mahal visit.

Wear comfortable shoes and allow for exposed outdoor walking. Check the current ticket and admission arrangements through official channels.

Afternoon: choose one additional area

After lunch, choose according to your interests:

  • Qutub Minar complex: Suitable for travellers who want another major architectural site. Allow a separate road or Metro journey and approximately 90 minutes inside.
  • Old Delhi: Suitable for travellers interested in markets, street life and an exterior introduction to the historic quarter. Keep the route selective and account for traffic and walking.

Do not attempt both options after Humayun’s Tomb unless you substantially shorten the visits. Red Fort interiors and additional museums need their own time and opening-day checks.

Evening: India Gate and dinner

Visit the permitted public areas around India Gate and Kartavya Path if access conditions allow. Follow security barriers and avoid assuming that every adjoining government precinct is open to visitors.

Have dinner near your hotel or in a convenient central area, then prepare for the early Agra departure. A hotel with straightforward vehicle access is helpful for collecting luggage the next morning.

Day 2: Travel to Agra for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort

Leave Delhi around 6–6:30 am, subject to safe driving conditions, and keep the day focused on the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Starting from Delhi means this is a late-morning Taj visit rather than a sunrise visit.

Morning transfer and Taj Mahal visit

Allow approximately four to five hours for the door-to-door journey, a short break, parking and the final approach. Traffic, fog and your Delhi starting point can extend this allowance.

Visit the Taj Mahal first, keeping roughly two to three hours for security, the gardens and the mausoleum if selected. Leave substantial luggage securely with your hotel or agreed transport arrangement rather than carrying it towards the entrance.

The main mausoleum requires an additional ticket. Choose the appropriate category when booking, carry identification and follow the visiting-duration conditions printed on your ticket.

The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset. It is closed on Fridays for general viewing.

Lunch and Agra Fort

After lunch, continue to Agra Fort with at least 90 minutes to two hours available before closing. The fort opens from sunrise to sunset, so the afternoon sequence needs particular care during shorter winter days.

Explore the permitted palace courtyards and audience halls, and look for views towards the Taj Mahal when visibility allows. Some sections are restricted and are not part of ordinary visitor access.

Keep the evening light

Check in, have dinner and rest. If the Delhi journey is delayed, protect time for the two main monuments instead of adding shopping demonstrations or another attraction.

For travellers who specifically want sunrise at the Taj Mahal, the better solution is an additional Agra night or a revised Day 1 with an evening transfer from Delhi.

Day 3: Travel to Mathura for Krishna Janmabhoomi and Vishram Ghat

Leave Agra after breakfast and travel towards Mathura, allowing approximately one and a half to two hours before additional temple-area parking and walking time. Keep Krishna Janmabhoomi as the day’s main darshan priority.

Morning: Krishna Janmabhoomi

The complex is revered as Krishna’s birthplace and contains several important shrines. Check the latest opening periods before leaving Agra, because access to individual sections and midday breaks can affect the visit.

Leave phones, electronics and unnecessary bags at your accommodation or an authorised deposit facility, according to current security instructions. Carry identification and keep the group together through screening.

Allow the morning to remain flexible. If queues are long, postpone optional sightseeing rather than rushing the principal darshan.

Lunch, check-in and an optional temple

After darshan, have lunch and check in. If you are staying in Vrindavan, account for the transfer from Mathura and avoid unnecessary journeys back and forth.

Dwarkadhish Temple is a useful additional Mathura stop if its opening period matches your schedule. Do not assume it will remain open simply because Krishna Janmabhoomi is accessible at that time.

Evening: Vishram Ghat

Spend the later part of the day at Vishram Ghat on the Yamuna. Observe the devotional activity, sit where permitted and confirm the day’s ceremony time locally if you wish to attend aarti.

A boat ride is optional. Agree on the complete fare and route before boarding, use suitable life jackets and follow current river restrictions.

If Prem Mandir’s evening lights are your main priority, visit Vishram Ghat earlier and replace the riverside evening with a transfer to Vrindavan. Attempting both evening programmes can make the day rushed.

Day 4: Vrindavan Temple Visits and Return to Delhi

Begin with your most important Vrindavan darshan and aim to leave for Delhi by approximately 2–3 pm. This allows a useful morning without making the entire return journey dependent on late-evening traffic.

Morning: Banke Bihari Temple

Reach during a confirmed morning darshan period and allow time for the pedestrian approach, footwear arrangements and queue. The temple’s seasonal hours and special notices should be checked before travel.

Darshan follows repeated curtain openings, so the view may be brief even after a substantial wait. Follow the queue and avoid pushing forward when the curtain opens.

The temple states that there is no dedicated VIP darshan system. Verify any promised paid shortcut directly with authorised representatives.

Choose your remaining morning stops

Depending on the queue and your interests, add one of the following:

  • A nearby old-city shrine: Such as Radha Vallabh, if open and convenient.
  • ISKCON Krishna Balaram Mandir: A separate transfer towards Raman Reti, suitable for worship and kirtan.
  • Prem Mandir: Suitable for daylight darshan, marble architecture and the devotional displays.

Prem Mandir’s published morning session is 8:30 am to 12 noon. It cannot be treated as an unrestricted lunchtime stop after a long Banke Bihari queue.

If Banke Bihari takes most of the morning, choose one remaining priority or proceed to lunch. Three major temple visits before noon should not be promised.

Return to Delhi

Collect luggage, have lunch and begin the return journey. Allow approximately three and a half to five hours to your Delhi destination, with more time for congestion or diversions.

Do not combine Prem Mandir’s evening fountain programme with a tightly timed Delhi flight or train. If the lights are essential, see them on Day 3 or extend the trip.

Transport Options and Travel Time Between Destinations

A private vehicle is convenient for this route because you change accommodation twice and carry luggage between sightseeing stops. Trains can reduce some travel time, but local transfers and temple-area access still need planning.

Approximate road allowances

  • Delhi to Agra: Roughly 210–240 km, depending on the starting point and route; allow four to five hours door to door.
  • Agra to Mathura: Roughly 55–65 km; allow one and a half to two hours.
  • Mathura to Vrindavan: Roughly 12–15 km between central areas; allow 30–60 minutes or longer during busy periods.
  • Vrindavan to Delhi: Approximately 160–190 km depending on the destination; allow three and a half to five hours.

These are planning ranges rather than guaranteed journey times. Festival restrictions, urban traffic, parking and the final pedestrian approach can add significantly to travel.

Private car or hired cab

Ask for a written quote covering the full route, daily operating hours, kilometre allowance, tolls, parking and driver expenses. Confirm the vehicle’s luggage capacity rather than judging suitability only by passenger count.

Vehicles cannot reach every temple entrance. Expect walking or a permitted local transfer in the busiest parts of Mathura and Vrindavan.

Train-based travel

Book a suitable Delhi–Agra train and arrange local sightseeing separately. Continue from Agra towards Mathura Junction where a practical service is available, then use road transport for Vrindavan.

Check the exact Delhi departure station and Agra arrival station. A fast train journey does not include the transfer from your hotel or the station-to-monument connection.

For a public-transport itinerary, keep fewer sightseeing commitments and choose hotels that simplify station transfers.

Where to Stay in Delhi, Agra and Mathura–Vrindavan

Book one night in Delhi, one in Agra and one in Mathura or Vrindavan. Choose locations according to the next morning’s journey as well as the attractions nearby.

Delhi: convenient access for Day 1 and departure

Central or well-connected South Delhi accommodation can work for the suggested city sights. Airport-side accommodation is useful for a late arrival, but may add travel to and from the sightseeing areas.

Ask about early breakfast, checkout and vehicle pickup. Avoid selecting a hotel solely because it is advertised as close to one attraction.

Agra: Taj Ganj or a road-accessible hotel

Taj Ganj is useful for proximity to the Taj Mahal, while a hotel with straightforward road access may simplify luggage handling and the next day’s Mathura transfer.

Confirm whether your vehicle can reach the property entrance. Keep valuables with you or in secure storage rather than leaving them casually in a parked car during sightseeing.

Mathura or Vrindavan?

Mathura is convenient for Krishna Janmabhoomi, Vishram Ghat and travellers departing through Mathura Junction.

Vrindavan reduces the journey to your Day 4 temple programme and suits travellers prioritising Banke Bihari or Prem Mandir. Staying in the old lanes may involve a walk with luggage, while Raman Reti or other road-accessible areas can simplify vehicle transfers.

  • Check lift availability and room access for older relatives.
  • Confirm bathroom facilities and hot water.
  • Ask about the actual route from parking to reception.
  • Read cancellation conditions carefully for festival dates.

Chal Banjare’s Uttar Pradesh travel options can help place accommodation and transfers within the wider route.

Four-Day Trip Budget, Best Season and Sightseeing Schedule Tips

October to March generally offers more comfortable sightseeing weather, although winter fog can affect road travel and monument visibility. The budget depends mainly on accommodation, transport and whether you share vehicle costs.

Illustrative budget for two adults

For two Indian adults sharing one room over three nights, consider these initial planning allowances:

  • Accommodation: ₹6,000–₹12,000 for three nights.
  • Food and drinking water: ₹3,200–₹5,600 across four days.
  • Private sedan and agreed local transfers: Approximately ₹14,000–₹20,000, subject to inclusions and actual quotation.
  • Monuments and guiding reserve: Approximately ₹1,500–₹3,000, depending on Delhi choices and guide services.

This gives a preliminary total of roughly ₹24,700–₹40,600 for two adults. It excludes travel to Delhi, shopping, optional boats, premium services and any taxes or vehicle charges not included in the quotation.

These figures are budgeting allowances, not a Chal Banjare package price. Foreign-national monument charges, larger vehicles and festival accommodation can increase the total.

Seasonal planning

  • Winter: Allow for fog and shorter daylight; do not rush the Agra afternoon.
  • Summer: Start early and include indoor or shaded rest periods.
  • Monsoon: Expect showers and slippery surfaces; check river activities separately.
  • Holi and Janmashtami: Treat Mathura–Vrindavan as a festival itinerary with different crowd and transport demands.

Checks before confirming the trip

  • Ensure the Taj Mahal visit does not fall on Friday.
  • Book the correct Taj ticket, including mausoleum entry if wanted.
  • Confirm current temple opening periods and belongings restrictions.
  • Keep Vrindavan’s morning programme selective.
  • Arrange Prem Mandir’s lights on Day 3 if a daytime Delhi return is required.
  • Allow a substantial buffer before any Day 4 flight or train.

For an important evening departure, leave Vrindavan earlier and reduce sightseeing. If missing that connection would be costly, an additional Delhi night is the more dependable arrangement.

Frequently Asked Questions About Delhi Agra Mathura Vrindavan 4 Days Itinerary

The route goes from Delhi to Agra, then Mathura and Vrindavan before returning to Delhi. This places Braj along the return journey rather than requiring separate Delhi-based excursions. It assumes a usable first morning, so late arrival requires a reduced Delhi programme rather than compressing the same sightseeing into an evening.
Plan one night each in Delhi, Agra and either Mathura or Vrindavan. Choose according to the next day's route, luggage access and principal darshan. A central label alone is insufficient, so check vehicle pickup, lifts and actual walking approaches instead of selecting only by distance from one attraction or the lowest room rate.
Choose two substantial sightseeing interests and a manageable central evening rather than every major monument. The article pairs Humayun's Tomb with one additional area, leaving time for lunch and road travel. Prepare for the next morning's departure and reduce optional stops if arrival, weather or traffic removes usable sightseeing hours.
An ordinary early departure from Delhi produces a later-morning Taj visit after the road journey and final approach. For sunrise, revise the previous overnight or add an Agra night. Protect the main monument blocks and a meal break rather than using an unrealistic dawn promise to compress the transfer and security time.
Fatehpur Sikri, an extensive Govardhan visit, Barsana and Nandgaon need extra time or replacement of core activities. The four days already include long transfers, monuments and selected temples. Do not insert substantial excursions into small gaps merely because a vehicle is available, particularly when opening periods and stamina constrain the rest of the route.
Make Krishna Janmabhoomi the principal darshan and keep the morning flexible for security and queues. Add Dwarkadhish only if its own session aligns, then choose a later Vishram Ghat visit. If Prem Mandir's lights are the priority, replace rather than stack evening experiences so the transfer and rest remain practical.
Keep Banke Bihari or your principal shrine first, then choose one realistic remaining stop according to queues and current sessions. Three substantial visits before noon should not be guaranteed. Allow lunch, luggage and the Delhi road transfer, cutting optional sightseeing when an important departure needs a larger buffer.
That creates a later Delhi return and should not be combined with a tight flight or train. See the lights on the preceding evening or extend the stay if they are essential. The final day is designed around a daytime temple programme, and evening illumination is different from daytime darshan or grounds access.
A private vehicle simplifies luggage and changing hotels, while suitable trains can reduce some intercity travel. Compare station transfers, local sightseeing and temple approaches as well as the main journey. Public-transport versions need fewer fixed commitments, and a hired car still cannot reach every security entrance or narrow old-city lane.
Place the Taj visit on an operating day, confirm temple sessions and book appropriate tickets. Compare the complete transport and room inclusions, leaving separate allowances for optional boats, shopping and services. Keep return buffers generous and use another Delhi night when missing an important connection would make the compact plan too demanding.
